In 2027, 25 July falls on a Sunday. On that day, the Feast of Saint James the Apostle coincides with the Lord\u2019s Day, and Santiago de Compostela officially becomes the spiritual heart of Europe. This is <strong>Xacobeo 2027<\/strong>, the Compostelan Holy Year, and it happens only 14 times a century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">If you have ever thought about walking the Camino, if you have ever felt that quiet call so many people describe and so few can explain, <strong>2027 is your year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"xb-section\">\n<div class=\"xb-wrap\"><span class=\"xb-label\">A thousand years of history<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"xb-h2\">It all began <em>with a star<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">According to tradition, in the 9th century a hermit named Pelagius saw a shower of stars falling over a field. When he reached the spot, he found an ancient tomb and alerted Theodomir, Bishop of Iria Flavia, who identified the remains as those of the Apostle Saint James the Greater. King Alfonso II travelled there, becoming the first pilgrim in history, and ordered a small chapel to be built over the tomb. The place was named Santiago de Compostela: \u201cthe field of the star.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">From then on, the Way of Saint James became one of the three great pilgrimage routes of Christianity, alongside Rome and Jerusalem. For centuries, pilgrims from all over Europe walked west, weaving a network of roads, bridges, hospitals, churches and towns that transformed the continent. The Camino was the first European Cultural Route and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">Today, more than a thousand years after that first pilgrimage, millions of people still walk those same paths. Not all of them are looking for the same thing (some seek answers, others silence, others simply a different season in their lives), but they all arrive at the same place: Praza do Obradoiro, in front of the cathedral, with a backpack on their shoulders and a story to tell.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"xb-section soft\">\n<div class=\"xb-wrap\"><span class=\"xb-label\">Europe\u2019s first network<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"xb-h2\">Europe was built <em>on pilgrimage<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">Long before treaties, EU institutions or the Schengen Area, Europe was already being crossed on foot, and largely by following the yellow arrows and scallop shells that led to Compostela. The Camino de Santiago was not only a religious route. It was Europe\u2019s first great project of integration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">From the 9th century, and above all between the 11th and 13th centuries, millions of pilgrims crossed the Pyrenees and walked through France, Castile, Le\u00f3n and Galicia to kneel before the Apostle\u2019s tomb. They did not travel alone. Craftsmen, merchants, minstrels, monks, physicians, architects and troubadours walked with them. So did languages, techniques, ideas, music and new ways of living together. The Camino was a highway of civilisation long before highways existed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">Along its routes grew a network of towns, bridges, hospitals, hostels, monasteries and cathedrals. Places like Jaca, Puente la Reina, Logro\u00f1o, Burgos, Le\u00f3n, Astorga, Ponferrada and, of course, Santiago were born or flourished. Brotherhoods and religious and military orders (Cluny, the Cistercians, the Templars, the Order of Santiago) offered protection, shelter and care. Kings granted charters and privileges to protect pilgrims. In practice, it was an early international law of hospitality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">Romanesque art spread along the Camino: churches, monasteries, cathedrals, sculpture, painting and music. The <em>Codex Calixtinus<\/em>, written in the 12th century, records miracles and liturgy, and also includes a practical pilgrim\u2019s guide describing stages, shrines, people and customs. It is one of Europe\u2019s first travel accounts, and proof that the Camino was already a space of continental exchange.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">Above all, the Camino was a laboratory of coexistence. Franks, Galicians, Castilians, Navarrese, Germans, English, Flemish, Italians and Portuguese met along the way. Languages we now recognise as part of the European family mixed together. Melodies were shared that still echo in sacred music today. People learned to cross borders with a pilgrim\u2019s passport in their hand and a question in their heart. That experience of meeting the other, and discovering that the stranger is not an enemy but a fellow walker, lies at the foundation of modern Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">Over time, pilgrimage declined, but it never disappeared. In the 20th century the Camino was reborn. In 1987 the Council of Europe declared it the first European Cultural Route, recognising that its legacy is civic as well as religious: a symbol of unity, dialogue and cooperation. In 1993 UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. Today the Camino is one of Europe\u2019s defining symbols, and its network of routes keeps growing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">It has often been said that Europe was made by walking to Compostela. That is why visiting Santiago in 2027 is more than experiencing a Holy Year. It means travelling the veins through which the first Europe flowed. Crossing the bridges that once joined peoples. Sleeping where hospitality was first taught. Understanding that Europe was not built only in offices, but also on roads, in conversations, in songs and in shared footsteps.<\/p>\n<div class=\"xb-quote\">Walking to Santiago in Xacobeo 2027 is, in a way, building Europe again. This time, with you in it.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"xb-section\">\n<div class=\"xb-wrap\"><span class=\"xb-label\">What makes a Holy Year special<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"xb-h2\">A privilege granted <em>almost a thousand years ago<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">The Compostelan Holy Year is not a modern invention. It is a privilege the Church granted to Santiago almost a thousand years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">In 1122, Pope Callixtus II (who had walked to Compostela as a pilgrim before becoming pope) established the Compostelan Jubilee for the year 1126. Decades later, in 1179, Pope Alexander III confirmed and made the tradition permanent through the papal bull <em>Regis Aeterni<\/em>, placing Santiago alongside Rome and Jerusalem as a place of jubilee indulgence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">Since then, every time 25 July falls on a Sunday, a special time of grace begins. The rhythm is irregular (it follows a cycle of 6, 5, 6 and 11 years), which makes every Xacobeo unique. After 2027, the next one will not come until 2032.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\"><strong>The Holy Door: a threshold you can only cross in a Holy Year.<\/strong> On the Quintana fa\u00e7ade, behind the cathedral, there is a door that stays walled up during ordinary years. It opens only when a Holy Year begins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">Every 31 December before a jubilee year, the Archbishop of Santiago strikes the wall three times with a silver hammer. When the wall falls, he cleanses the threshold with holy water and olive branches and is the first to walk through. From that moment, the Holy Door stays open all year, and crossing it becomes the gesture that sums up the jubilee pilgrimage: a step inward, a step towards forgiveness, a step towards something new.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"xb-section soft\">\n<div class=\"xb-wrap\"> <span class=\"xb-label\">Why 2027<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"xb-h2\">Why 2027 and <em>not another year?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p class=\"xb-body\">You could walk the Camino at any time. The Camino is always there.
